MY KIT

Like most photographers, I really enjoy the camera kit. The practical hands-on tactile process is all part of the photography experience. But the older or more experienced I have become, the less I concern myself with owning the latest kit. In fact, I have always been quite pragmatic about choosing the right gear to do the job rather than owning the latest and greatest (and often most expensive) camera.

Despite the barrage of online influences, most cameras in the modern era will do the job.

So with that in mind, here is what I now use:

  • Canon Full Frame cameras - Mirrorless & DSLR.

  • RF & EF Canon L Lenses, focal lengths 16mm - 400mm.

  • Fujifilm X-T series mirrorless APS-C cameras.

  • Fuji XF mount lenses, focal range 16mm - 300mm,

+ a few third party auto focus & manual lenses.

  • A honed selection of vintage film cameras & lenses.

  • Lowepro, Gitzo, Shimoda back packs. Lowepro, Ona and Think Tank shoulder bags.

  • Various carbon fibre tripods, geared & ball heads.

  • LEE 100mm graduated & solid ND Filters + circular magnetic.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As with any trade, the tools I use have always been based on the job they are needed to do. Whether it’s a camera, lens, tripod or bag, it has to to work practically, ergonomically, and also fit within budget. Over the last couple of years I have been easing my workload and within that process I have trimmed down my kit from a medium-format-system to a carefully considered full-frame camera/lens set up to suit my needs moving forward.
